Why hearing instruments are not enough?For people with severe to profound sensorineural hearing losses, hearing instruments are often unable to improve their ability to hear faint sound and speech understanding. This is because hearing aids only amplify sound to the inner ear. However in severe to profound sensorineural hearing losses, the loss of hearing is due to damage in the inner ear especially to the tiny hair cells in the cochlea. These hair cells convert acoustic vibrations into electrical signals for the auditory nerve to send to the brain. Without these hair cells, people cannot understand the sound that they perceived. What is Cochlear Implant and how it works?Cochlear implant is a device that provides direct electrical stimulation to the auditory nerve. It bypasses the outer ear, middle ear and the damaged inner ear. As seen in Figure 1, a cochlear implant consists of 2 parts. One part on the outside of the user is used to collect sounds through a microphone and process them into a digital signal. That signal is sent through an antenna (referred to as a headpiece) which is magnetically positioned over the implant. The other portion consists of the implant which is placed under the skin, behind the ear. The implant receives the signal from the headpiece and delivers it to an array of electrodes positioned within the cochlea. The electrodes stimulate the hearing nerve fibers directly and send electric signals to the brain where these signals are interpreted as sound.
